Grace Elizabeth Square

The Grace Elizabeth square is named after my niece because like her it is beautiful and ever changing. It’s a 12 inch square made with 2 colors of worsted weight yarn. (I used a light up crochet hook size 5.0, which you will see in the photos.) Here’s the free pattern:

Skill level: Intermediate

Special stitches:

Dc cluster: (dc3tog) yarn over and insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and insert hook into same stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and insert hook into same stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook

Htrc: (half triple crochet) yarn over twice, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook

Puff: yarn over and insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and insert hook into same stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and insert hook into same stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on hook, chain 1

Abbreviations:

Ch – chain

Hdc – half double crochet

Dc2tog – double crochet 2 together

Rep – repeat

St – stitch

Sl st – slip stitch

Dc – double crochet

Sp – space

Sc – single crochet

Htrc – half triple crochet

Blosc – back loop only single crochet

Beg – beginning

Bet – between

Sk – skip

Bpsc – back post single crochet

Color A

Make a magic circle

Round 1: ch2 (counts as 1st hdc), 11 hdc in circle

Round 2: ch2, dc2tog in same sp (counts as 1st dc cluster), ch1, *dc cluster in next st, ch1, rep from * 11Xs, sl st to 1st dc cluster

Color B

Round 3: join in any ch sp with a standing sc, 2 sc in same sp, 3 sc in each ch sp around, sl st to 1st sc

Round 4: ch2 (counts as 1st hdc), hdc in same st, hdc in each of next 2 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 2 st, rep from * 10 more Xs, join to 1st hdc

Color A

Round 5: join in 3rd loop of any st with a standing sc, sc in 3rd loop of each st around (3rd loop is horizontal bar behind stitch, visible from above), (should be 48 3rd loop sc), sl st to standing sc

Round 6: ch6 (counts as htrc and ch2), *in next 12 st, htrc, 2dc, hdc, 4sc, hdc, 2dc, htrc, ch2, rep from * 3 more Xs, omitting last htrc and ch2, sl st to 4th ch of beg ch6

Round 7: sl st into corner sp, {ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), hdc, ch2, 2hdc in corner}, *being careful not to miss 1st hidden st, in next 12 st, 2sc, 2hdc, dc, 2htrc, dc, 2hdc, 2sc, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc in corner), rep from * 3 more Xs, omitting last corner, sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch2

Color B

Round 12: join in any corner sp with standing sc, sc, ch2, 2sc in same corner sp, *sc in 3rd lp of each st across (don’t miss the 1st hidden st!), (2sc, ch2, 2sc in corner sp), repeat from * 3 more Xs, omitting last corner, (30 3rd lp sc each side), sl st to standing sc

Round 13: sl st into next st, sl st into corner sp, ch2, dc (counts as 1st dc2tog), ch1, dc2tog, ch2, dc2tog, ch1, dc2tog in corner, *{sk 4 st, (1st st is very hidden!), (dc2tog, ch1, dc2tog, ch1, dc2tog) in next st} 5Xs, sk 4 st, (dc2tog, ch1, dc2tog, ch2, dc2tog, ch1, dc2tog) in corner sp, rep from * 3 more Xs, omitting last corner, sl st to 1st dc2tog

Color A

Round 14: join in any corner sp with standing sc, sc, ch2, 2sc in corner sp, 2sc in each ch sp (bet dc2tog), puff st bet groups of 3dc2tog (over sp bet groups and anchoring bet middle 2 sc in round 12),(also, don’t forget to close the puff with ch1),continue in this manner until you get to corner sp, (2sc, ch2, 2sc) in corner spaces, sl st to standing sc when you get all the way around

Color B

Round 15: join in any corner sp with standing sc, ch3, sc in corner sp, *{blosc in next 4 st, ch1, sk puff st (and ch1 that’s part of puff st)} 7XS, blosc in next 4 st, (sc, ch3, sc) in corner sp, repeat from * 3 more Xs, omitting last corner, sl to standing sc
